I’ve been photographing people professionally since 2012, but I’ve been in the healthcare space since 1991. One day in 2010, a friend asked me, “If you could be anything - anything at all, what would it be?” In my typical, starry-eyed Dez fashion, I blurted out, “a photographer for National Geographic!” I laughed after I said it, but my friend looked at me with an intensly serious face. “So why aren’t you?” My answer? “Because I love photography, but I don’t want it to become a job - a thing of necessity that my next meal, or paying my bills is dependent on. I don’t want to steal the joy from it.”
“So why can’t you do both?”
Holy Crap. That had never occurred to me! The reason is because every photographer I had ever met said you couldn’t be a professional photographer unless you did it full time, so don’t bother if you don’t plan to fully commit. Bullshit. Total and complete bullshit. I’m living proof that you can have a lucrative full-time job and blend it with your love of something else, do it well, AND DO IT WITH PASSION.
Being a commercial real estate agent with 30 years of experience in the healthcare community has allowed me to be involved in the construction of hundreds of healthcare offices, and coupled with my photography experience, I am able to showcase not just the beauty of a space, but also its functionality.
